Society and Culture in Canada

If you want to see real diversity and a massive collection of amazing cultures then Canada should be one of the top locations on your list! This is because of how the country was helped to grow in the 1800’s when the government invited immigrants to come and settle in Canada to help build up the country’s development. While mainly British and French settlers came to Canada, many also came from Asia and other places to find a new life. This also means that if you visit Canada you should have at least three or four translating dictionaries with you if you want to get around and make friends!

Canadians are famous as some of the nicest people in the world- and this extends to their love of laughter. Comedy is massively popular in Canada, and their massive Just for Laughs festival definitely prove it. The arts are just as popular, from paintings made by the aboriginal people thousands of years ago to internationally acclaimed artists like David Milne, Michael Snow and even the modern artist Jack Bush. This is without even mentioning the incredible crafting and pottery that have been made for years by Canadians.

Canada has also delivered more than their fair share of litterateurs and writers. Many famous authors have been Canadian, such as Leonard Cohen, Margaret Atwood and even Yann Martel of The Life of Pi fame has been living in Canada since forever. Writers in Canada tell a diverse story, and books are published in multiple languages throughout the different regions. It makes for an amazing experience walking through local book shops and seeing the massive assortment of books to read- definitely the bookworm’s ultimate dream!

Of course, Canada gets ragged on a lot for spawning Justin Bieber, but their music scene has way more than that to offer. Songstress Celine Dion is Canadian, as is pop rocker Avril Lavigne and hit sensation Bryan Adams. Theatre is just as great, and television has massively picked up in the past few decades. Smallville, Battlestar Galactica and the ever popular X-files were all filmed in Vancouver, Canada….
