A GALA EVERYONE WILL REMEMBER - Oct 13, 2011

On October 13, 2011, the hall was festooned with life preservers and other maritime paraphernalia, but their help was not needed as “The Titanic: A Gala to Remember” sailed through a glorious voyage, unlike its ill-fated namesake.

Guests enjoyed a champagne cocktail hour with time to greet friends and bid on the beautiful items donated to the silent auction before door prizes were awarded.  A five-course dinner followed, based on the types of cuisine the Titanic’s passengers would have enjoyed.

Then everyone relaxed as Ivan Sayers and models presented the fabulous fashions that would have been worn by passengers boarding the Titanic and partaking in its recreational and glamorous activities.  Woolen coats, sweaters, and knitted bonnets indicative of steerage class followed by perfectly tailored suits, gigantic feathered hats, fencing outfits, swimwear, and exceptional evening dresses indicative of first class paraded down the ramp.  Ivan Sayers’ commentary about the fashions of 1912 was insightful and witty.   His garments were incredible to view.

The Original Costume Museum Society’s gala is a fundraising event, which helps to finance its on-going operations, as well as provide funding for a future museum.  It is what makes educational programming and the acquisition and care of a collection of historical garments possible.  Many people worked very hard to make “The Titanic” event a success.  We thank each and every one of them for their contributions:

  • Members of the OCMS board, including Evelyn Hortabagyi (exceptional Chair of the gala committee), Shelley Kozlowski (assistant to the Chair), Sharon Amy (silent auction coordinator), Sandra Scott (organizer of volunteers), Anita Heiberg (in charge of publicity), Alethea Acacio, Betty Done, and Katherine Locke (willing helpers in all areas),
  • Ivan Sayers, showman and expert on the history of fashion, who shared garments from his personal collection,
  • Models Cindy Kravchenko, Virginia Newton-Moss, Mary Lou Rust. Maxi von Schwierin, Melanie Talkington, Jennifer Sigfried, Josie Deeds-Vincki, and Susan Frank,
  • Margaret Duckham, Claus Jahnke, Corey Mah, Randy Squires, Kathleen Taylor, and Walter Zicha, backstage assistants, who dressed and made up the models,
  • Kirbi Bethune, Patrick Zhan, Jill Smolkin, Caroline Cho, Lisa Truong, Beril Kaleli, Gabrielle Peckham, students from the Art Institute of Vancouver, who were able and courteous volunteers,
  • The Hellenic Centre, for a perfect venue and menu,
  • West Marine, for the loan of maritime objects,
  • Peter Loo, for poster design,
  • Silvana Rivero, for form design assistance, and
  • The Vancouver Courier and The Vancouver Sun, for publicity.

Many private and anonymous individuals donated to the silent auction as did the following businesses, for which the OCMS is very grateful:

  • Arts Club Theatre
  • Button Button
  • Capilano Suspension Bridge
  • The Fall
  • Fluevog Shoes
  • House Gallery Boutique

“The Cocktail Hour” Was Fun While Raising Funds

Many guests arrived in cocktail dresses, some wearing net whimsies on their heads, in honor of the Original Costume Museum Society’s fundraiser, “The Cocktail Hour: Fashion on the Rocks, 1925-1965.”  Held at the Hellenic Centre in Vancouver, on October 21, the theme was immediately evident in the martini glass table decorations and the martini glass silhouettes on the stage’s velvet curtains.  Cocktail hors d’oeurves and a selection of cocktails, including “The Ivan Sayers” (actually a Rusty Nail, because Ivan likes Scotch), started the party going.  After dinner, Ivan Sayers and his team of theatrical models brought historical cocktail fashions to life as one splendid outfit after another strutted down the runway.

The silent auction was a great success, raising much needed funds for the Original Costume Museum Society’s operations.

“The Cocktail Hour” would not have been possible without the generous support of the following individuals and businesses:

James Rogers and Betty Done, co-chairs of the event
Ivan Sayers, fashion show producer
Models: Kate Hammett-Vaughn, Cindy Kravchenko, Virginia Newton-Moss, Mary Lou Rust, Maxi von Schwierin, Melanie Talkington,, and Jennifer Sigfried

"PUTTING ON THE GLITZ": OCTOBER 1, 2009
FUN FOR ALL AND A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER FOR THE OCMS

You cannot get any better than "Sold Out" and that was what "Putting on the Glitz" was SOLD OUT and SPECTACULAR,because of the efforts of an amazing event team.

Glamorous fashions from 1916 to 1946 reflected Hollywood chic, as model after model walked on stage wearing one stunning outfit after another. With a bit of Hollywood history and insider information thrown in, Ivan Sayers and his corps of models made eyes pop just as yesteryear's starlets did on the big screen.

A delicious dinner and a silent auction filled with stylish and useful goods and services rounded out the fun-filled evening.

The OCMS wants to establish a museum of the history of fashion, ethnic costume, and textiles and has been working towards this goal since 1992. It has a fabulous collection of historical garments and accessories and it produces well-attended programs. All that is needed is a home-base in which to produce exhibitions, to deliver educational programs for public schools, fashion design schools, post-secondary schools, and continuing education programs, and to care for the collection in a professional way. Of course what this means is . . .all the OCMS needs is money and lots of it.

"Putting on the Glitz" will help the OCMS reach that goal. Part of the proceeds of the event will defray the OCMS's annual operations, but a large part will go to a fund established for capital development, for the creation of a true museum.

So a huge THANK YOU to everyone who made the event a success:

  • To all those who purchased tickets and OCMS tote bags and were generous while bidding on the excellent silent auction items, your financial support is greatly appreciated.
  • Of course, the highlights of the evening were Ivan Sayers and the glamorous models, who were as theatrical as movie stars. The models were Nila Allat, Sheila Kirkby, Cindy Kravchenko, Cynthia Mey, Mary Lou Rust, Maxie von Schwerin, Dawn Marie Selman, Jennifer Siegfried, and Melanie Talkington. Margaret Duckworth, Claus Jahnke, and Heike Maulhardt helped dress the models and style their hair and makeup. Steve Allat escorted the models off the runway. All of their generous contributions of knowledge, time and talent are greatly appreciated. Ivan's devotion to the OCMS is unparalleled. When (not if) a museum is created, he will be its inspiration and heart.
  • The entire board of the OCMS worked on this event diligently, but two people in particular, the Co-Chairs of the event, deserve special recognition. They are Maureen Attwell and Betty Done, who attended to every detail while coordinating the evening.
  • The rest of the board includes: Ann Daskal, Krista Hoeberg, and S Lee, who worked so hard to publicize the event and who deserve kudos for the sold-out crowd, Wendy Nichols, the OCMS's Vice President, who coordinated the silent auction (a massive job), Andrew Nichols, the OCMS's Treasurer, who coordinated ticket sales, Sandra Scott, the OCMS's Secretary, who was a Jill-of-all-trades and who spearheaded the tote bag fundraiser, Sharon Amy, another Jill-of-all-trades who said "Yes" to every job she was given.
  • Other extremely important members of the "Glitz" team were: Nila Allat, who designed the event poster, Steve Allat, who coordinated the OCMS website, Laura Offley, who produced and distributed publicity as editor of the OCMS newsletter, Melanie Talkington, a past OCMS Treasurer and current owner of Lace Embrace Atelier, who provided a place to sell tickets, Maria de Rama and Kimmy Park, who assisted with publicity and ticket sales at community events, and Gerhard von Rosen, who photographed the event.
  • Volunteers from the Vancouver Art Institute and elsewhere guided guests to their seats, "sold" tote bags, and helped the silent auction run smoothly.
  • Additional support came from the White Rock Museum and Archives, the Delta Museum and Archives, as well as the University Women's Club of Vancouver.
  • The Hellenic Centre provided a perfect venue and a delicious dinner.
  • The following individuals and businesses helped promote the event:
    Fanny Kiefer, Rogers Cable 4
    Renee Lafontaine, Burnaby Antiques Fair
    Sheryl MacKay, CBC Radio
Sarah Murray, Honey Mustard Fashion and Media Services
    Nikki Renshaw, CFUN 1410
    Stephanie Smith, Portabello West
  • Because "Putting on the Glitz" was conceived as a fundraiser, the silent auction was a major part of the evening and a major source of revenue. The OCMS gratefully thanks the following companies and individuals, who supported the OCMS by donating wonderful goods and services to the silent auction:

    Air Canada

"ORIENT EXPRESSED" AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS! - October 16, 2008

Sun Sui Wah Restaurant on Main Street was the place to be the evening of October 16, 2008. Active bidding on the approximately sixty items in the silent auction started the "Orient Expressed" evening on a high note. The delicious ten-course dinner kept things humming and people "yumming." Of course, the stars of the show were tuxedoed Ivan Sayers and the models who wore examples of historic Asian influence on Western fashion, as well as silk-jacketed James Rogers and the models who showcased contemporary Asian influence on Western fashion. With exceptional fashions, fun, and food, this special event raised funds to support the care and maintenance of the Original Costume Museum Society's collection of historic clothing and the presentation of educational programs throughout the year.
