"PUTTING ON THE GLITZ": OCTOBER 1, 2009
FUN FOR ALL AND A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER FOR THE OCMS
You cannot get any better than "Sold Out" and that was what "Putting on the Glitz" was SOLD OUT and SPECTACULAR, because of the efforts of an amazing event team.
Glamorous fashions from 1916 to 1946 reflected Hollywood chic, as model after model walked on stage wearing one stunning outfit after another. With a bit of Hollywood history and insider information thrown in, Ivan Sayers and his corps of models made eyes pop just as yesteryear's starlets did on the big screen.
A delicious dinner and a silent auction filled with stylish and useful goods and services rounded out the fun-filled evening.
The OCMS wants to establish a museum of the history of fashion, ethnic costume, and textiles and has been working towards this goal since 1992. It has a fabulous collection of historical garments and accessories and it produces well-attended programs. All that is needed is a home-base in which to produce exhibitions, to deliver educational programs for public schools, fashion design schools, post-secondary schools, and continuing education programs, and to care for the collection in a professional way. Of course what this means is . . .all the OCMS needs is money and lots of it.
"Putting on the Glitz" will help the OCMS reach that goal. Part of the proceeds of the event will defray the OCMS's annual operations, but a large part will go to a fund established for capital development, for the creation of a true museum.
So a huge THANK YOU to everyone who made the event a success:
-
To all those who purchased tickets and OCMS tote bags and were generous while bidding on the excellent silent auction items, your financial support is greatly appreciated.
-
Of course, the highlights of the evening were Ivan Sayers and the glamorous models, who were as theatrical as movie stars. The models were Nila Allat, Sheila Kirkby, Cindy Kravchenko, Cynthia Mey, Mary Lou Rust, Maxie von Schwerin, Dawn Marie Selman, Jennifer Siegfried, and Melanie Talkington. Margaret Duckworth, Claus Jahnke, and Heike Maulhardt helped dress the models and style their hair and makeup. Steve Allat escorted the models off the runway. All of their generous contributions of knowledge, time and talent are greatly appreciated. Ivan's devotion to the OCMS is unparalleled. When (not if) a museum is created, he will be its inspiration and heart.
-
The entire board of the OCMS worked on this event diligently, but two people in particular, the Co-Chairs of the event, deserve special recognition. They are Maureen Attwell and Betty Done, who attended to every detail while coordinating the evening.
-
The rest of the board includes: Ann Daskal, Krista Hoeberg, and S Lee, who worked so hard to publicize the event and who deserve kudos for the sold-out crowd, Wendy Nichols, the OCMS's Vice President, who coordinated the silent auction (a massive job), Andrew Nichols, the OCMS's Treasurer, who coordinated ticket sales, Sandra Scott, the OCMS's Secretary, who was a Jill-of-all-trades and who spearheaded the tote bag fundraiser, Sharon Amy, another Jill-of-all-trades who said "Yes" to every job she was given.
-
Other extremely important members of the "Glitz" team were: Nila Allat, who designed the event poster, Steve Allat, who coordinated the OCMS website, Laura Offley, who produced and distributed publicity as editor of the OCMS newsletter, Melanie Talkington, a past OCMS Treasurer and current owner of Lace Embrace Atelier, who provided a place to sell tickets, Maria de Rama and Kimmy Park, who assisted with publicity and ticket sales at community events, and Gerhard von Rosen, who photographed the event.
-
Volunteers from the Vancouver Art Institute and elsewhere guided guests to their seats, "sold" tote bags, and helped the silent auction run smoothly.
-
Additional support came from the White Rock Museum and Archives, the Delta Museum and Archives, as well as the University Women's Club of Vancouver.
-
The Hellenic Centre provided a perfect venue and a delicious dinner.
-
The following individuals and businesses helped promote the event:
Fanny Kiefer, Rogers Cable 4
Renee Lafontaine, Burnaby Antiques Fair
Sheryl MacKay, CBC Radio
Sarah Murray, Honey Mustard Fashion and Media Services
Nikki Renshaw, CFUN 1410
Stephanie Smith, Portabello West
-

"ORIENT EXPRESSED" AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS!
Sun Sui Wah Restaurant on Main Street was the place to be the evening of October 16, 2008. Active bidding on the approximately sixty items in the silent auction started the "Orient Expressed" evening on a high note. The delicious ten-course dinner kept things humming and people "yumming." Of course, the stars of the show were tuxedoed Ivan Sayers and the models who wore examples of historic Asian influence on Western fashion, as well as silk-jacketed James Rogers and the models who showcased contemporary Asian influence on Western fashion. With exceptional fashions, fun, and food, this special event raised funds to support the care and maintenance of the Original Costume Museum Society's collection of historic clothing and the presentation of educational programs throughout the year.
